Theatre of the Oppressed: A Workshop in Rainbow of Desire

Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY ~ February 2013

The Rainbow of Desire workshop, sponsored by Performing Arts for Social Change, Center for Transformative Action (CTA) and Ithaca College, took place February 23-24th, 2013 and was a huge success! We had 17 participants, all with very diverse backgrounds including students, professors and local Tompkins County professionals. Participants spent twelve full hours delving into the work of Augusto Boal. Each packed day began with games and Image Theatre techniques. This helped participants begin to move and think outside of the box and trust the others in the group, readying them for the intense Rainbow of Desire work which ended both days. Through Rainbow of Desire exercises which use imagery to convey personal stories of oppression, the group confronted very difficult but universal issues and left with a better understanding of how these techniques might be used in their own lives and careers in the future.

This powerful workshop was preceded on February 22nd by a very lively Theatre of the Oppressed Q&A. There, individuals who were interested in the work but unable to commit to the workshop got a taste of the exercises and learned about the history of Theatre of the Oppressed and its political development.
